Project Detailed Description

ABTECH Africa Consults Limited is a key partner in the implementation of the GENEFAST project, “Harnessing Genomic Selection to Accelerate Growth Performance of Nile Tilapia towards Climate-Smart Aquaculture in Uganda,” a three-year initiative (2025 to 2028) funded under the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP).

The project is implemented through a strategic international partnership involving the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), specifically NARO–Bulindi Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute, and the University of Chile through its Aquaculture Genomics Laboratory (LABGEN).

The project intends to pioneer the application of genomic selection to develop fast-growing, climate-resilient Nile tilapia strains tailored to Ugandan aquaculture systems, establish a cost-effective Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) panel for accurate genetic selection, shorten production cycles, improve feed and water use efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen the overall productivity, profitability, and sustainability of the aquaculture sector.

ABTECH Africa Consults Limited supports the partnership through research coordination, knowledge exchange, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring effective collaboration and translation of genomic innovations into practical, climate-smart aquaculture solutions in Uganda.
